"Kallang River" - posted by Ghostly[P]layer at 4:56 PM

We were at the Kallang River on 7th April 2009, Tuesday, after school. Another secondary class, 1A, also went with us. it was for our UBD Projects concerning the various subjects. We all thought it was going to be boring.

We took a bus from school to the river behind the Singapore Indoor Stadium. We walked to the river and sat down. We took turns to collect the river water samples and started taking down notes. We used the Universal Indicator Strip to take the pH level. The river was polluted by the thrash. We felt disgusted. The pH level was neutral. We then took pictures of the river and its surroundings, before other groups came. Then, we completed most of the questions for the Kallang River on our worksheet before boarding the bus to go to the Sungei Serangoon River.

The cause of the river being so polluted is that people litter in the river, for conveniences' sake, like when they cannot find a dustbin. Pollution also comes from the harmful substances released from the boats when they travel along the river. Toxic chemical waste is discharged from factories. Furthermore, the waste is untreated.

This will affect the lives of the fish that live in the river. The water in the river might be too polluted to support the lives of the fish. This will also make the view of the Singapore river unsightly. This can deter tourists from making a trip down to Singapore. And in order to have a mass clean-up in an effort to make the Singapore River cleaner. This will incur a huge cost, and with the slowing economy of Singapore, it would be better if the government has as much funds as possible, for future use should Singapore need it in these trying times.
